HLTAID011 Provide First Aid covers the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to people who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Licensing, regulatory and refresher requirements should be confirmed with the relevant national, state or territory work health and safety authority.

What the training covers

  • Responding to an emergency situation and assessing a casualty
  • Applying appropriate first aid procedures, including CPR and use of an AED
  • Managing common injuries and conditions, including anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, bleeding, burns, fractures and shock
  • Communicating incident details to emergency services and completing workplace or site documentation
  • Reviewing the incident and recognising possible psychological impacts on rescuers

Assessment requirements

Assessment must include practical demonstrations in realistic scenarios or simulations. Candidates must demonstrate first aid responses for an unconscious, breathing casualty; an unconscious, non-breathing adult and infant; a range of common conditions and injuries; and at least one simulated first aid incident.
