About this unit

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation covers the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

The unit applies to people who may be required to provide CPR in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Licensing, regulatory and refresher requirements should be confirmed with the relevant national, state or territory work health and safety authority.

What the training covers

  • Recognising and assessing an emergency situation
  • Ensuring the safety of yourself, bystanders and the casualty
  • Assessing a casualty and recognising the need for CPR
  • Performing CPR in accordance with ARC guidelines
  • Operating an automated external defibrillator (AED) according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Communicating incident details and reviewing the response

Assessment requirements

Assessment must include practical demonstrations in realistic scenarios or simulations. Candidates must demonstrate management of an unconscious, breathing casualty; an unconscious, non-breathing adult, including at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR and use of an AED; and an unconscious, non-breathing infant, including at least two minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR.

Assessment requires access to adult and infant resuscitation manikins, AED training devices and personal protective equipment. Compression and ventilation skills must be demonstrated on resuscitation manikins following ARC guidelines.
