About this unit

CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry is the general construction induction unit commonly known as the White Card. It covers the knowledge and practical skills needed before carrying out construction work under applicable work health and safety requirements.

The unit applies across construction workplaces, but site-specific induction and any additional licensing, regulatory or certification requirements still need to be confirmed for the relevant state or territory.

What the training covers

  • Identifying and reporting construction hazards
  • Explaining ways to remove or reduce risks
  • Understanding safety signs, job safety analyses, SWMS and SDSs
  • Explaining workplace roles, including supervisors, first aid officers and WHS representatives
  • Responding to incidents and emergencies, including the use of fire equipment
  • Selecting and fitting common construction PPE, including a hard hat, high-visibility clothing, eye protection and hearing protection

Assessment requirements

Assessment includes practical demonstration and oral or written reporting. It must be completed with access to the required PPE, relevant work health and safety legislation and realistic construction safety information.
